Teak Wood
The majority of our antiques were made from Teak. Teak wood (tectona grandis) is native to India and has been widely used in furniture making and ship building because of its resistance to insects and weather and for its long life reliability. Teak is fast growing and can reach up to 150 feet in height and 3 to 5 feet in diameter and is usually about 40 years old when harvested. Teak is a beautiful golden brown with lovely black streaks and a straight grain. The wood is exceptionally heavy and dense which make it great for everyday use and durability over time. We have found that occasional waxing with a quality hard wax makes all the difference in the life and beauty of teak.
Indian Rosewood
Indian Rosewood (dalbergia latifolia), commonly referred to as Sheesham, is a hardwood grown throughout India. Because Indian Rosewood dries nearly defect free it is ideal for fine furniture, musical instruments and specialty items. Indian Rosewood is used mainly for our new handmade furniture pieces and we work extensively to ensure that the wood is properly treated prior to construction. Unlike old teak, which has sufficiently dried over time, Indian Rosewood must be kiln dried to a moisture content of about 8% to prevent warping and cracking. When treated properly this wood holds hardware well and finishes nicely. The grain, which is dense and slightly coarse, creates a beautiful finished product that stands apart from most woods with its interesting texture and golden brown to purple hues.
Acacia wood
Acacia trees are an established economic staple since early times as source of tannins, gums, timber, fuel and fodder. Acacia is a hardwood that grows rapidly, and flourishes in the dry Indian Desert. Acacia has a wonderful honey color that wares beautifully over time.

General
For everyday cleaning of our Indian antiques as well as our handmade furniture, we use a mild solution of vinegar and water. Not only is this cleaner totally biodegradable, it also picks up dust and dirt well. For occasional waxing we like the Floor and Furniture Wax by Bioshield.
